Subject: Desktop Publishing on the PC
Subject: Desktop Publishing on the PC
Episode Summary:
Paul Brainerd, Aldus Corporation talked about PageMaker on Windows which combined text and graphics to create documents. He demonstrated ... how to create a new document and provide its features like number of page and page size. He then set the font type to Times Roman and font size and modify the document by converting from 1 column to 2 columns then adds a text and an image through a Place command. The software support many zoom sizes and when the text is edited the text will reflow. He recommend an AT PC because DP needs a powerful computer.
Roger Archibald, Hewlett Packard talked about the laser printer and its importance in the Desktop Publishing. He showed many sample papers printed by a Hewlett-Packard (HP) laser printer including text and graphics. The HP Document Description Language (DDL) and how it fits with their products.
Report by Wendy Woods
In Jan 1985 Apple introduced its laser printer. Adobe system wrote PostScript (PS) the language which the laser printer uses to print out documents. The PS has the chance to become the standard (this prediction comes true). After Apple employed PS in their laser printers, DEC, Wang, Texas Instrument, dataproducts, and many others followed. Adobe grow from 2 people in 1982 to 80 in 1986. PS is used in 50000 installed laser printers which helped start the Desktop Publishing (DP) revolution.
John Meyer, Ventura Software: The Ventura Publisher is different than PageMaker in three aspects (1) Speed, Ventura can work on XT but it is [obviously] faster on AT. (2) Concepts built-in meaning the user can work with the software even when the user does not understand the typographic terms. (3) It support long documents (i.e. many pages) such as technical manuals.
John Meyer then demonstrated how the Ventura software support many file formats such as Word Star, Microsoft Word and others. It can make a heading or sub heading by selecting an item from a menu without the need to write any commands. He also demonstrated how to insert images into a document. Table of content and indices is generated automatically by the software.
Richard Amen, Dest Corporation: Demonstrated a DEST PC Scan Plus scanner on Compaq PC. The scanner can do an OCR on the scanned image (Wow OCR in the 1980s!). It can scan the page and convert into text in 15 Seconds. the scanner can handle 16 most common type style. It can also scan images which is faster than scanning text pages because there is not conversion is needed i.e. no OCR needed.
Jonathan Seybold, Seybold Publications: He predicted to see a product that can integrate text and graphics and can be used for many purposes such as writing a memo to complex documents. "Gary added: One day we will have such computers at home to write a letter to a grand-mum." The software will be usable by anybody with no need for specialized skills or specialized equipment or specialized trained people. "George added: The people will be more computer literate."
Stewart: Why it takes too long to start DP to the MS-DOS on a PC?
Jonathan answered: Mac environment is made for such applications and that is returned back to Xerox PARC in 1970s. Xerox PARC were doing DP in the 1970 through applications. MS-DOS is changing its environment into Mac machine to support DP.
Random Access File:
AT&T leaves PC business but work with Olivetti in Europe.
AST introduced its first computer AT compatible of 10MHz and 1MB.
IBM PC Clones will be shown in Wall-Mart and Toys "R" Us
Paul Schindler Software Review: He talked about "Idea Generator" software. The software help people develop and complete their ideas in a simple manner. The software is priced at US$200.
Microsoft provided a new version of the Word that allows you to move files from the Mac to the PC.
Note:
This Episode is a complementary to "Desktop Publishing #1" which was focused on DP on Macs. This Episode however focuses on DP on the PC.
